Here are some simple steps to change your domain name like a tech expert!

You might want to change your domain name to a new one for rebranding purposes, or just so that people would remember it more easily. Are you aware that you can change it without the help of your hosting provider? Yup, you can, and it’s pretty easy. Read on to find out.

Step 1: Choose a New Domain Name

You need to first check your new domain name availability.

You can check a new domain here. Once you have found a better and more suitable domain name, choose your preferred extension (.com, .blog, .my… ).

Step 2: Rebrand Your Website Design

You will need to update your website design/content so that it suits your new domain name. For example, a new logo may be necessary.

Other things that need an update are:

  • Your ‘About’ page
  • Your website footer, which shows copyright information
  • The tagline of your site, which appears on a browser’s tab

Next, it’s a must to inform your visitors about the changes so they won’t scratch their heads wondering if they’re on the right website.

Step 3: Redirect All Traffic to Your New Domain

Now the important step is to redirect visitors from the old domain to the new one. This way you won’t lose any visitors, especially those who had visited your old site before.

You can do it on your cPanel. Simply login, go under the Domains section and click on the ‘Redirects’ icon.

On the Redirects page, under ‘Type’, pick the option of Permanent (301) and the old domain name you want to redirect.

Next, type in the new domain you registered, and enable “Redirect with or without www.”

Once you click on the ‘Add’ button, you’re good to go! Now, whenever someone visits your old domain, they will be redirected to your new one. For the time being, we suggest to keep both domains active until all traffic to your old domain falls to almost zero.

Step 4: Inform Your Users About Rebranding

Now you’ve successfully setup everything, it’s time to update your users regarding the changes on your website such as the new URL, logo, etc.

Inform them by:

  • Adding an explanatory post to your website.
  • Social media platforms — post an update to your followers and provide the link to your site.
  • Send out email newsletters to your customers.

Easy?
